SUMMARY:Online Learning: Exploring the Tools and Scaffolding to Make It
DESCRIPTION:Teachers as learners need to be provided with and supported by
  a range of resources and learning and teaching strategies to strengthen c
 urriculum design and delivery. At Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC)\
 , teachers and teacher-librarians work in partnership to incorporate infor
 mation literacy\, thinking tools\, ICT\, and inquiry based learning into s
 uccessful units of work\, which assist in developing critical thinking and
  offer students the intellectual tools to engage with information. As we c
 ollaborate to develop students' skills and knowledge we also provide teach
 ers with a wealth of practical tools to assist their learning and professi
 onal development. This session will focus on the 'Researching Together: En
 gaging Minds'  CD ROM resource which we use to support our library and inf
 ormation literacy program at BSSC.  We will demonstrate the initial planni
 ng templates based on best practice\, which we use with teachers and stude
 nts to develop units of work using the six research formats. Samples of un
 its of work from across all learning areas will outline skill builders use
 d in the learning process\, such as templates to assist students with note
  taking skills to avoid plagiarism\, thinking curriculum activities and st
 rategies for writing bibliographies. Collecting and reporting evidence for
  assessment will also be discussed.  Participants will be shown how to dev
 elop the online research formats using word\, PPT and/or HTML. Overall\, a
  very practical session with a resource you can use immediately with your 
 classes.

SUMMARY:The Young Apprenctice
DESCRIPTION:At Southern Cross Primary School our aim is to promote student
  engagement. As the Multi Media Coordinator\, Esther Hall promotes literac
 y learning and purposeful communication through ICT\, and has begun a TPL 
 research project about 'enhancing literacy through ICT'.   Esther has deve
 loped a unit of work known as 'The Young Apprentice' which has engaged stu
 dents in learning by making ICT fun and interesting. This project recently
  won a Microsoft 'Innovative Teacher Award 2005'. Student enjoyment of lea
 rning leads to increased knowledge and skill level across the curriculum. 
 Students have created a product and must present to an audience using the 
 following programs Microsoft Word\, PhotoDraw v2\, PowerPoint\, Movie Make
 r\, Publisher\, Sound Recorder\, Windows Media Player and Vegas Studio (op
 tional). Students also need access to digital cameras\, a video recorder o
 r web cam. This project is for upper primary and would be successful for s
 tudents in years 7 and 8.

DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, more votes were tallied for US Idol than for Kerry o
 r Bush in the US Presidential Election.  In 2006\, Victoria goes to the po
 lls and will\, for the first time\, use a proportional voting system for t
 he Legislative Council. Now is a great time to explore electoral modernisa
 tion - especially the brave new world of online democracy.     With the in
 troduction of a Civics and Citizenship strand in VELS\, Internet voting an
 d other new technologies can provide an avenue for introducing online citi
 zenship into the school curriculum. This session introduces the technologi
 es and outlines how to run a mock-election that would:    a) provide conte
 nt for civics curricula\;   b) foster inter-school activity with school-by
 -school results analysis\;   c) demonstrate the reach\, speed and richness
  of e-democratic tools\;  d) stimulate debate around e-democracy\, global 
 citizenship and representation\; and finally   e) provide a facility for o
 n-going polling on current issues.    E1C operates a high-volume Internet 
 voting system which allows teachers and administrators to create on-line v
 otes for as few or as many schools as necessary. School communities can ti
 e it in to curriculum activities for the Civics and Citizenship Domain of 
 the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. E1C utilises Information Techn
 ology that enables school communities to fully engage in a localised democ
 ratic e-voting process. This session explains how.

 ity IT course is low and has been declining alarmingly in the last few yea
 rs. This paper will examine the VTAC and Higher Education statistics to sh
 ow the steady decline in popularity of IT courses since 2000\, with young

 een working on the creation of a Visual Basic.Net resource kit to support 
 teachers in the implementation of Visual Basic.Net in their classrooms.  T
 heir brief was to provide material that could be used without the need for
  translation and would be easy and accessible for students of all skill le

 to establish that intended learning outcomes have been achieved is a chall
 enging task. Intelligent agents can help with this endeavour.   This paper
  reports on recent research which programmed\, tested and further develope

 s were compared to student's observed behaviour to establish a correlation
 . It illuminated the discrepancy between underlying pedagogical assumption

DESCRIPTION:A key challenge for educators is to implement innovative teach
 ing practices that will address integration of ICT in the classroom. This 
 presentation will demonstrate how schools can adopt eLearning resources to

 these computer skills can be certified. An overview will be provided cover
